Abstract

Photosensitive electrostatographic element comprises an electrically conductive substrate carrying a photoconductive coating consisting of polyvinyl carbazole (I) as matrix resin, contg. 0.2-10 wt % (on I), of 2,4,7-trinitro-9-fluorenone (II) as a sensitiser and 1-20 wt % (on I + II) rhombohedral particulate seleneium (III) as photoconductive pigment, the (II) and (III) being homogeneously dispersed in the (I). The substrate may be e.g. of brass, aluminium, steel, aluminised polymers, or a dielectric or insulating material, coated with a conductive material, e.g. glass coated with a thin layer of chromium or tin oxide. A blocking film may be mounted between the substrate and the photoconductive layer, e.g. a 0.1-2 u film of nylon, epoxy resin, aluminium oxide, polystyrene, butadiene polymer, acrylic resin, vinyl resin, cellulose resin or alkyd resin. The elements can be used in conventional electrostatic copying machines. They have improved pan chromaticity than conventional elements and a dynamic range midway between that of amorphous selenium (ca 0.6) and that of the system CdSxSe1-x (1.5).
