Abstract

A softening compsn. for fabrics comprises a quat. ammonium cpd. of formula (I), and a higher aliphatic alcohol sulphate in a wt. proportion of 10:1 to 2:1, pref. 8:1-4:1. where X is halogen such as Cl or Br, R1 and R2 are each (m)ethyl, R3 is (m)ethyl or 16-20C alkyl, R4 is 16-20C alkyl. The compsn. is prepd. by heating the mixt. at 50-55 degrees C and adding it to water at 35-50 degrees C with sufficient agitation to form an intermediate gel, which is further agitated to liquefy it. Then at ordinary temp. optional other ingredients and water are added. The quat. cpds. give a compsn. stable to storage with easy viscosity adjustment.
