Abstract

The circuit provides protection for leads which are balanced about a potential referenced to earth. The circuit normally is required when the load impedance to earth varies due to component failure. The circuit is connected in parallel across the load d. c. supply (1, 2) and consists of a zener diode (11) and power transistor (3) in series between the positive and negative supply rails. The transistor is driven from an amplifying transistor (4) both being connected as a Darlington pair. The Darlington pair is controlled from a pilot circuit sensitive to both positive and negative rail variations about earh (6). Variations are detected on two Zener diodes (5, 8) whose common point is grounded, the remainder of the chain consisting of a transistor-resistor-diode combination between the two supply rails.
