Abstract

Diesel fuel additives comprise oil-soluble organic derivs. of rare-earth metals, esp. Ce or Pr. Pref. additives are salts of >=6C organic carboxylic acids (esp. naphthenic acids), salts of >=6C phosphates, phosphines, sulphates or sulphonates, acetylacetate salts, or chelates of pentadiene-dicarboxylic acid. The additives are pref. used in an amt. corresp. to a metal concn. of 10-250 (10-100) ppm for distillate fuels or 25-250 ppm for heavy fuels. They can be added in solid form or in the form of solns. The additives reduce smoke emission, decrease fuel consumption, inhibit corrosion of valves, etc., and reduce deposit formation in the exhaust system. A typical additive is Ce acetylacetate.
