Abstract
Properties of an aqueous soln. such as its pH value are determined by passing the monochromatic beam of a light source through it, pref. after a pH-sensitive indicator has been added to it. The proportion of the light transmitted is measured and converted into an electrical signal. Its amplitude is indicative of the desired property. This replaces the subjective (visual) determination of a colour change, when pH-papers or indicators are used, by an objective system. The new system is less expensive and easier to handle than electronic pH meters. The pH-value can be determined with an accuracy of 1/10 in a range from 1-14.
