Abstract

A method is provided for measuring the extent of exothermic or endothermic chemical reactions while the reactions proceed and for controlling such reactions. In the method, at least part of the heat produced or absorbed by the reaction mixture is continuously removed or replaced by a heat exchange medium passing through the reaction vessel at a known rate, and measurements are continually made of the ingoing and outgoing temps. of the heat exchange medium. The numerical value of the ingoing temp. is stored in a memory device for a period equal to the time taken for the heat exchange medium to pass from the point of measurement of the ingoing temp. to the point of measurement of the outgoing temp., and this value is then compared with the numerical value of the outgoing temp. The heat produced or absorbed by the reaction mixture is then computed as a function of the product of the measured temp. difference and the heat capacity and the rate of flow of the heat exchange medium, so that the control of the reaction may then be effected accordingly.
