Abstract

The hatch covers (7) of the freighter are made as a hollow structure which is sealed to be watertight. They can be dropped over the side, with the ship board cranes, to act as lighters for offshore loading, or they can serve as fuel or water tanks. As fuel tanks the convers increase the range of the ship, without requiring large tank space inside the holds. The covers can be divided into chambers, each for a different fluid, and can also be used as extra ballast control.
