Abstract

A pellet for treating liq. cast iron comprises a powder, e.g. for inoculating the iron, and a PVA binder. The PVA pref. has a viscosity of 4-50(4)cP and an ester value of 20-135(125). The inculant is pref. a ferrosilicone powder, 0-400 u in particle size of compsn. 80% Si, 2% Ca, 2% Al, 2% Zr and balance Fe. Alternatively the inoculant may be Ca silicide. The pelletn decomposes completely in contact with liq. cast iron and leaves no deposits and therefore has no harmful effect on the appearance or properties of the cast iron prods, PVA is also self-inflammable in the presence of heat.
