Abstract

Hydrodealkylation of alkyl aromatic hydrocarbons by reaction with hydrogen in the absence of steam is described. The reaction is effected at 450-650 degrees C at 1-30 bars pressure using a H/hydrocarbon molar ratio of 1-10 with a space rate of 1-10 vols. of liq. charge/vol. catalyst/hr. The reaction is in the presence of a catalyst comprising rhodium and >=1 of Pt and Pd on an active alumina support having a 150-300 m2/gm specific surface and a 0.5-0.8 cm3/gm. total porous vol. The support consists of active alumina agglomerates obtd. by dehydration of alumina hydrate in a current of warm gas. An alternative support has a specific surface of 100-170 m2/gm., the above porous vol. and is obtd. by autoclave treatment in aq. neutral or acid medium. The process is esp. applied to toluene and xylenes. The process has the advantage of using lower temp. and pressures than previous rhodium catalyst processes. The catalyst has greater stability and gives a greater selectivity and is also cheaper.
