Abstract

The appts. takes a fixed vol. sample of effluent, dissolves any hydrocarbon of the sample in a known vol. of CCl4 and then uses a spectrophotometer to measure the absorption of IR energy by the soln. Each sample of the series taken from the effluent supply is directed into a mechanical mixing vessel together with a dose of CCl4 and any selected reagent. The contents of the vessel are delivered through a decanting unit to separate CCl4 soln. from the remaining effluent. The soln. is filtered and then passed through a spectrophotometer which drains into a soln. receiver. All stages of sample extn. and measurement, dosing, mixing, decanting, sepg., filtering and spectrophotometry pref. follow a sequence automatically determined by a programmed controller. Used for automatically taking regular samples from an effluent supply and checking each sample hydrocarbons content which is measured with great precision, partic. to give warning if a sample contains hydrocarbons at a level above an acceptable limit, usually 20 p.p.m.
