Abstract

A horizontal cylindrical vessel, rotatable about its longitudinal axis and provided with an opening in its shell for loading and discharging the contents. During rotation of the drum, the opening is normally closed and sealed by a removable cover. The cover-opening and closing operations can now be remotely controlled quite independently of the rotary motion of the vessel. Both opening and closing operations follow automatically sequenced stages. To open or close, the cover pref. slides on a guided path longitudinally w.r.t. the opening. More partic. the cover travels on rollers provided with guide rails. During its main longitudinal movement, the cover should be supported clear of the opening. At its 'closed' end of the travel, the cover approaches and is finally clamped against the edge of the opening. Longitudinal travel of the cover and clamp operation are pref. achieved by fluid power cylinders. Used for the extraction and fermentation of juice from fruit etc., partic. from grapes for winemaking. Cover movements can be made while the vessel is rotating. The cover can be opened and closed while the opening is at its lowest position. This is very useful when discharging or cleaning very large vessels.
