Abstract

The numerically controlled vertical mill has a tool changing magazine, cam tracks mechanically operating an arm to transfer a tool to the spindle nose and vice versa. Two cam tracks on the side of the spindle head actuate the followers as this head descends and retracts. One follower turns a crank wheel and a rack rotates a gear. This rotates a shaft and pivots the transfer arm upwards, removing the tool from the magazine. The second follower actuates another rack and gear, the loaded transfer arm swinging down and pivoting into the plane of the spindle nose to locate the tool.
