Abstract

A pipe is cut by a burner along its penetration curve, i.e. where it will be subsequently joined to a cylindrical body, e.g. a second pipe, the axes of pipes being at an angle w.r.t each other. At the start of a first cut, the burner axis is radial to pipe to within plus-or-minus 10 degrees, and specific angular relationships are maintained while the burner is guided round the pipe; in an additional cut, the burner tip is swivelled w.r.t. the initial radial direction so it forms an angle of >=15 degrees w.r.t. the surface of pipe. The pref. appts. uses a burner mounted on a slide driven in a direction parallel to the axis of pipe; the burner can pivot on an axis which is at 90 degrees to the axis of pipe; and a computer is employed to drive four motors controlling the burner movement and the rotation of pipe or the rotation of the burner round pipe. Used for cutting the end of one pipe which will be welded to another pipe at an oblique angle, esp. when pipe has a thick wall and a good welded joint is required round the entire periphery.
