Abstract

A steering wheel is made by the electric resistance welding of tubular elements to each other or to non-tubular elements. Prior to welding, metal packing pieces or plugs are inserted into some of the tubular elements, and remain in the latter after welding. The plugs are pref. forced into the tubes prior to shaping the latter; and the tubes are welded simultaneously to the hub of the steering wheel. The plugs pref. possess several different cross-sections along their length and extend beyond the welded zones; one section may be identical with the bore of a tube or possess >=1 flat; and >=1 boss may be provided on a plug. The end of the plug projecting out of the tube is pref. deformable. Used for the automatic, mass prodn. of steering wheels which can deform to absorb the energy of a drver's body if an accident occurs.
