Abstract
A heading and vertical computer unit for aircraft has a stable platform (1) with three gyroscopes 2x, 2y, 2z) isolated from the carrying vehicle's movement by a gimballed mount. One axis (2y) is kept vertical and the two othes (2x, 2z) horizontal by means of position servos on each axis and two accelerometers (or a double-accelerometer (3) on the horizontal axes. There are two vertical servo-loops, one for each accelerometer. At the output of the accelerometer, each loop has a system for compensating the relative rotational speed of the vehicle w.r.t. the earth's rotation. Thus the platform is kept perpendicular to the local vertical. A damping system is used, this being saturated for high vehicle acceleration values.
