Abstract

The hydraulic damper for the aircraft undercarriage incorporates gas springs for damping and a hollow control piston (7) in which a second piston moves. The second piston serves to alter the height of the suspension while retaining the damping control. The damper is locked in either setting by mechanical or hydraulic clamps. The damper provides good damping under different conditions, with the damping characteristics varied by control valves. The height of the suspension enables small aircraft, especially helicopters to be air freighted or to sit securely on moving decks etc. The damper also incorporates a crash protection to absorb large impact forces by progressively collapsing.
