Abstract

The servo action is derived from the frictional force on the brake pads (2) after they have been brought into contact with the disc (1) by means of a low pressure hydraulic slave cylinder (4). Each pad is pivoted on the short arm of a lever (3) which is itself pivoted (5) on the housing. The long arms of the levers, between which the cylinder (4) is mounted, are parallel to and straddle the plane of the disc, whilst the short arms are angled in, towards the disc. A spring across the ends of the long arms normally keeps the pads away from the disc. The lever disposition are such that as the pads move under the action of friction with the disc, they are automatically driven towards it and thus increase the braking load without application of higher force from the hydraulic cylinder.
