Abstract

A heat exchanger, esp. for cooling a fluid by means of air in a thermal or nuclear power plant, is built up from sub-assemblies in the form of rectangular plates. Each sub-assembly consists of a serpentine tube of aluminium or stainless steel, arranged between two plates of aluminium alloy, parallel to each other and having on their outer surfaces bosses with a flat top. The subassemblies are positioned one above the other, resting on the tops of the bosses, in batteries. Each battery has two manifolds to which the serpentine pipes are connected. The bosses are laid out in four-cornered figures with a boss at each corner and one at the centre, and the bends in the pipes of one sub-assembly are offset relatively to those of its neighbours. The exchanger copes satisfactorily with liqs. having a high surface tension, since there is little pressure loss in the piping circuits and it is arranged in easily handled blocks.
