Abstract

A method of examining low temp. fractures avoids ambiguous results caused by impurities deposited on the specimen and deformation occurring when the fracture profile is recorded by taking an impression in a metal layer. The sample fracturing and recording take place in a chamber in which the press is maintained below 10-7 Torr so as to avoid impurities. The fracture profile is recorded by depositing a layer of heavy metal such as Tantalum over a period of the order of 1 to 5 minutes in order to avoid deformations. The layer of metal deposited is approximately 10 to 15 Angstroms thick.
