New benzocycloheptenes are of formula (I) and (I: -CH2-NMe-R=CN) and acid-addn. salts: (where X is H, Cl, Br or I in the 1- or3-position; R is H or Me). Cpds. are intermediates for antidepressant benzocycloheptenes of formula (II): Typically, 7-cyano-6,7,8,9-tetrahydro 5H benzocyclohepten-5-one is prepd. from 8,9-dihydro 5H benzocycloheptene by reaction with acetone cyanohydrin and is converted, by a 4-stage reaction, into 7-dimethylaminomethyl-6,7,8,9-tetrahydro 5H benzocyclohepten-5-on- e.
