Abstract

The exhaust silencer for a motor car has a cylindrical body (1) which may be of either circular or elliptical cross-section. Internal baffles (4) support a number of pipes (2, 3). The end caps (6, 7) are shaped to match the body cross-section and have a U-shaped groove (12) form around the edge. An end cap is fitted over the end of the silencer, and the outer edge (14) is then deformed and swaged together with the body (1) to form a groove (19). Thus no part of the end caps (6, 7) projects beyond the outer surface of the body (1).
