Abstract
Trace impurities in the form of oxygen, water vapour and nitrogen are removed from noble gases. Oxygen and water vapour are removed by chemisorption on the active metallic component of a composition which consists of a heat-resistant oxidic support having a large surface area and the metallic component contained on the support as a surface compound. Then the residual noble gas, in order to remove the nitrogen, is put into contact with titanium or barium (7) heated to from 400 to 800 DEG C. The appliance for implementing the method has a container (3) which holds the chemisorption composition and has a gas inlet (3a) and gas outlet port (3b). The gas outlet port (3b) is connected to the gas inlet port (5a) of an electrically heatable tubular furnace (5). The tubular furnace (5) is packed with titanium or with packings coated with barium.
