Abstract
Process comprises (a) prodn. of a tyre carcase including its bead section, on a tyre-building drum; (b) application of the side wall assemblies on top of the carcase while this is on the drum; (c) application of a film of lubricant on tyre-building drum in such a way that a lubricant film free zone remains in the centre of the carcase; (d) fixing a tyre tread-girdle ply assembly on the carcase along the lubricant-free zone, the unfixed section of the tread-girdle assembly lying above the lubricant film; and (e) moulding and vulcanising the tyre in a tyre mould and stopping the closure of the mould directly before the end of the closure process for a time such that the outer dia. of the tyre tread surface is almost as great as the internal dia. of the mould. The pref. lubricant is zinc stearate. Method permits precision fabrication of radial tyres on a flat tyre-building drum and allows older appts. for the construction of diagonal (cross ply) tyres to be used in place of new and costly equipment for building radial tyres. Finally, in producing radial tyres, a considerable enlargement of the unvulcanised tyre can take place in the mould without interfering with a pantographic motion of the girdle plies, the width and angle of which can be accurately controlled.
