Abstract

A shaft furnace is described, having a pre-heating zone through which heated reaction flue gases can flow to heat material flowing downwardly through the zone, a combustion zone, and a cooling zone to which cooling air can be supplied to flow upwardly towards the combustion zone and cool downwardly flowing heated material burnt in the combustion zone. The shaft wall contains gas exit openings at the transition from the cooling zone to the combustion zone and gas inlet openings in at least two vertically spaced planes at the transition from the combustion zone to the pre-heating zone. Means are provided to lead gases flowing from the gas exit openings over a heat exchanger fully or partially into the gas inlet openings of the upper section of the transition from the preheating zone to the combustion zone and means are provided to lead a supply of fuel and heated fresh air from the heat exchanger, to which part of the gases from the exit openings may be added into the gas inlet openings of the lower section of the transition from the combustion zone to the pre-heating zone.
