Abstract
High temp. reactor e.g. for pyrolysis, decomposition and combustion reactions of organic and inorganic cpds. in which all the heat is supplied by radiation coupling comprises a reactor tube of porous refractory material capable of emitting radiant energy. Inert fluid is directed under press. through the porous tube wall to provide a protective blanket for the inside of the reactor tube. Reactants are directed in a predetermined path axially of the reactor tube and confined by the protective blanket within the central part of the tube. A heat shield directs radiant energy from an electric radiant energy source into the reactor tube to coincide with the path of the reactants. Since heat is supplied by radiation coupling the temp. of the reactant stream is independent of the temp. of the walls of the reactor tube. The tube therefore does not have to be made of material capable of withstanding the high temp. to which the reactant stream is subjected. The protective inert fluid blanket isolates the wall of the reactor tube from the reactant stream and prevents clogging by the accumulation of precipitates and deposits.
