Abstract
The wheel-balancing machine incorporates transducers mounted between shaft bearings and a support frame carrying a rotating shaft is rotated the wheel is mounted. The shaft is rotated by an electric motor and pulley belt transmission system. The transducers provide signals proportional to the out-of-balance forces detected in the shaft bearings. An optical arrangement for determining the wheel position consists of an angled mirror or prism (81) mounted on a sliding arm (82). The arm moves parallel to the shaft axis and is connected to a potentiometer to provide proportional electrical output. A parallel light beam can be reflected onto the edge of the wheel rim (80). The light reflected from the rim is used to determine the relative wheel position.
