Abstract

PTC materials (having a positive temp coefft. of electrical resistance) comprise a crystalline thermoplastic polymer having a gel fraction of 0.60-0.885 and a finely divided electrically conducting filler. Used for prepn. of strip heating elements which automatically switch off at a predetermined "switching temp", Ts. It has been found that the specific resistance of cross linked polymeric PTC materials on heating above peak temp remains constant only over a small temp increase. The resistance falls considerably on further heating and results in high energy prodn. from the electrical power source and runaway heating which can have disastrous consequences. This problem is avoided by crosslinking in such a way that the gel fraction of the polymer remains within the range claimed. The polymer used should have at least 10% and pref. 20% crystallinity as determined by X-ray diffraction. Pref. polymers are (co)polymers of C2H4, propylene, butene-1 and hexene-1 or copolymers of C2H4 with methacrylic acid, ethyl acetate, vinyl acetate or fluoride, polyoxy-methylene, ethylene or -propylene; polyvinylidene fluoride; polyphenylenesulphide, polymethacrylonitrile; polycarbonates, and polyimides. The conducting filler is pref. C black, but finely divided metals can also be used.
