Abstract

The image coding system scans the object and omits every second scan point. Signals representing these omitted points are formed by taking the average of the two scanned points on each side of it. Interpolation between scanned points separated by a non-scanned point can take place either in one scan direction or in the other orthogonal scan direction. It is accomplished by comparing the reconstructed point levels and the actual levels of points that have been missed out, i.e. not sampled. A correlation bit is added to every point transmitted giving the best simultaneous approximation in the horizontal and vertical directions, that is correlating each non-transmitted point with its four neighbours.
