Abstract

1534529 Facsimile systems XEROX CORP 30 Dec 1975 53117/75 Heading H4F [Also in Division G2 and G3] A method of scanning a surface, comprises causing a plurality of scanning heads 10, Fig. 2, to move relative to a surface 12 so as to trace-out a plurality of spaced parallel scanning paths, and successively repeating the scanning movement while causing a continuous slower relative movement between the scanning heads and the surface in a direction substantially perpendicular to the scanning paths whereby an interlaced scan is produced. The following conditions are satisfied for N scanning heads spaced apart by M line pitches, the heads 10 being advanced by S line pitches during each scan of the surface: N = S and KS # LM where K is any integer and L is an integer less than N. The scanning heads 10 may be mounted on a member 11 for motion parallel with the axis of a drum bearing the surface 12. Alternatively, the light from a plurality of sources 23, Fig. 4, can be scanned across a cylindrical surface 14 or a planar surface 15 by a polygonal scanner 25, surfaces 14, 15 moving in directions 16, 17 respectively. The light is either modulated before reaching surface 14 or 15 in accordance with information to be reproduced, or modulated by reflection from information on the surface which is to be read. The apparatus may be capable of operation either at a transmitter or as a receiver. The data from the separate scanning heads may be transmitted in series or in parallel and bandwidth compression may be achieved by run length encoding.
