Abstract

Process for maintaining the efficiency of a chromium electroplating bath which employs trivalent chromium but exhibits plating defects due to traces of metal impurities. A sufficient amt. of a water-soluble ferrocyanide, such as potassium ferrocyanide, is added to the bath to remove the metal impurities. The plating soln. can be tested for impurities using a filter paper impregnated in one zone with the ferrocyanide soln. and in another zone with a soluble iorn slat, and observing the change in colour. Typically 7mls. of a 20% soln. of ferrocyanide is added 1ml. at a time to treat a bath contg. 50ppm. mettalic impurities. Prevents plating defects such as a white bloom, brown spots and/or inadequate adhesion.
