Abstract

The dielectric optical waveguide cable, has a number of light conductors, with a central reinforcement and an enveloping mangle, with a strain relieving design to relieve the individual light guides when the cable as a whole is subjected to mechanical stress. The central reinforcement is made radially deformable (10), for example of a soft foam, and the individual light-guides (16) are wound around it in spiral form so that any extension of the cable as a whole results in a reduction in tdhe radii of the spirals without serious tension arising in the light guides. A restraining sheath (14) is employed around the central reinforcement and is in the form of a polymer housing.
