Abstract

A syringe has a tubular plunger body to the end of which is fitted a capillary tube held and sealed at its upper end in the housing by an elastic joint and open at its lower end. Inside the capillary tube a calibrated wire moves, this wire also passes through and is sealed against the elastic joint. The joint fits into a housing at the bottom of the plunger body, this housing having an outer wider section connected by a cone part to a narrower section so as to compress the joint against the capillary and the wire. Movement of the calibrated wire in the capillary displaces a vol. of liq. equal to the vol. change of the wire in the tube. The wire is always separated from the liq. by a vol. of air. Movement of the wire is achieved by moving a plunger, to which the wire is attached, inside the tubular plunger body. This plunger is a rod with parallel portions of cylinders having a radius slightly less than the inside radius of the tube, the cylinders having their axes displaced in relation to each other to from a series of steps on the rod. The steps rest on the free end of the tubular body and the distance between each step is calculated to give a precise vol. of liq. in the capillary tube. Alternatively the rod can have teeth that engage in a clip on the tubular body or vice versa, the teeth having specified spacings, and are disengaged from the clip by rotating the plunger. Used for taking and giving very small quantities of liqs. esp. for dosing applications. Wire does not contact successive liqs. so does not risk contamination. Gives great accuracy of small vols.
