Abstract

A C-contg. support (II), in which (part of) the C is in the form of polycrystalline graphite, is oxidised to form acid or base oxide gps. (III) on the surface. The oxidised (II) is impregnated with a soln. contg. cations or anions of a catalytically active metal (I) suitable for salt formation with (III). The impregnated (II) is dried and reduced to form a (I) layer on the surface. The prods. are sed esp. for fuel cell electrodes (in which (I) is a noble metal), partic. for the electrooxidn. of MeOH. The catalysts have higher activity than various conventional catalysts. The graphite can be integrated structurally in (II) or deposited in it in the form of a binder, filler or surface layer. (II) consists of C fibre, esp. in the form of a mat or paper. Suitable fillers include pitch, C2H4 cracking residue, polyphenylene, PVC and epoxide resin. The acid (III) can be produced by electrochemical or chemical oxidn. or ion bombardment and the basic (III) by heating to high temp. in N2, followed by the action of O2 at ambient temp. (I) pref. is noble metal(s). opt. with the addn. of a gp. IVa or IVb metal.
