Abstract

Antibiotic S 31794/F-1 (I) is a new cpd. produced by (a) cultivating a (I)-producing strain of the fungus Acrophialophora limonispora nov. spec. Dreyfuss et Muller on or in a nutrient medium and (b) isolating (I) from the fermentation broth and purifying inconventional manner. Fermentation broths obtained in the cultivation of (I)-producing strains of A. limonispora are also novel products. (I) has antimicrobial activity, particularly against yeasts and fungi. It has no activity against usual Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The activity of (I) against Candida strains pathogenic to humans if particularly marked. This, in serial dilution tests using 2% malt extact, pH 5.2-5.4. with incubation for 48-72 hrs. at 27 degrees, (I) has MIC's of 0.3, 1,32, 100 and 100 against Candida albicans, Candida Krusei, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Sporotrichum schenkii and Neurospora crassa, respectively. (I) shows activity in vivo tests for activity against Candida albicans sepsis.
