Abstract

Scintillator contains or consists of latex-derived polymer particles which are charged with >=16(>25) wt. % of >=1 hydrophobic fluorescent body. The scintillator pref. consists of a substrate and of an applied layer consisting of dry residue of an aq. latex. Latex polymer particles are charged with >=1 hydrophobic fluorescent body and opt. a non-quenching binder. Wt. ratio latex residue: binder is 1:0.75-10:1 (1:0.5-10:1). Scintillator is pref. used to determine emission of low energy, esp. beta-emission of radioactive materials, of about 0.01 Mev. Scintillators can exhibit high fluorescent body concns. When used as a dry layer, produced with wet layer thickness =30ml/100cm2, scintillator has count efficiency >=23% when tested with an active soln. of tritium-marked benzoic acid. Pref. lattices are derived from a copolymer of 1-99 wt. % styrene or deriv., 0-95 wt. % acrylate and 0-10% hydrophilic unsatd. monomer contg. and -SO3H gp. In example, a 50:40:10 n-Bu methacrylate/styrene/2-acrylamide-2-methylpropane sulphonic acid latex was charged with 2,5-diphenyl oxazole and 2,2'-p-phenylene-bis-(5-phenyl oxazole) mixt.
