Abstract

Electron multiplier particularly for use with light amplifiers where the electrons are derived from a photocathode, multiplied and accelerated towards a phosphor screen. The semi-conductor disc or slab making up the electron multiplier has high secondary emission properties and is pierced by holes (4) through the disc thickness into which incident electrons (e-) enter and are multiplied in their passage through to the output surface. Each hole has a diameter of the order of 30 microns and is spaced from its neighbours by hundreds of microns. The material (1) may be of CdS, CdTe or some other semiconductor having sufficient resistance to hold off the voltage across the disc created by the conducting surfaces (2, 3) laid on the disc.
