Abstract

The sludge is passed between an advancing strainer screen, such as a perforated conveyor band or rotary drum, and a pressing element such as a conveyor band which progressively approaches the strainer screen. Two separate strainer screens are now used in succession, the first serving to drain the sludge naturally, or at very light pressure, and the second on which the pre-drained sludge is pressed to extract further moisture. The two strainer screens are pref. of different mesh sizes, the first screen pref. having perforations of the order of 400 to 1500 microns while the second has perforations of the order of 80 to 600 microns. The liner speeds of the two screens are pref different and independently variable. Sludge supplied to the first screen is pref. delivered directly from a sepg. decanter with provision for continuous introduction of a flocculating agent. Used for straining out the moisture from sludge, partic. sewage sludge. Highly efficient, compact installation because large perforations are used in a preliminary straining stage and then fine perforations for high pressure straining. Linear speed of advance through each stage is set to achieve optimum straining efficiency.
