Abstract

The seat of the fire in the forest or plantation is surveyed from the air by helicopter and the hottest areas identified. Solid or liquid nitrogen, kept in insulated containers is dropped and distributed over the area. The nitrogen becomes gaseous and reduces the temperature of the fire. The nitrogenous gas blanket prevents oxygen from reaching the flames and these are stifled. The surrounding temperature is cooled, with the formation of frozen carbon dioxide taken from the air. The nitrogen can also be distributed at ground level and the burnt-out area is not damaged by chemicals to prevent replanting.
