Abstract

(A) Stabilisers for vinyl chloride (co)polymers comprise indole derivs. of formula (I):- (where R is 2-12C alkylthio, cyclohexylthio or allyloxy). Pref. cpds. are (I): R is butylthio, n-dodecylthio, isopropylthio, cyclohexylthio or allyloxy, all in the 4 posn). (I) are superior to 2-phenylindole in their ability to increase thermal stability and in their resistance to migration in the presence of solvents. Their acute toxicity is very low (LD50S3000 mg/kg), allowing use in food packaging.
