Abstract

Stabilisers for vinyl chloride (co)polymers comprise indole derivs. of formula (I):- (where R1 and R2 are 1-12C alkyl, cyclohexyl, 1-12C alkoxy, benzyloxy or OH provided that both are alkyl or R1+R2 is 1-3C alkylenedioxy and R3 is H, Me or MeO; Cpds. (I) are superior to 2-phenylindole in their ability to increase thermal stability and in their resistance to migration in the presence of solvents. Their acute toxicity is very low (LD50 >500 mg/kg), allowing their use in food packaging.
