Abstract

Pneumatic tyres are made by locating one or more prefabricated toroidal tubes in an annular mould cavity surrounding a wheel rim, then moulding the tyre body onto the wheel run to include the air tube and an integral insert. Used esp. for mfr. of tyres with walls thick enough to last the life of the vehicle, i.e. for heavy duty tyres for cars, trains, aircraft etc. Process is simpler than lay-up of conventional ply reinforced tyre carcasses and treads and subsequent assembly with inner tubes and wheels.
