Abstract

Petroleum hydrocarbon feeds contaminated with N cpds. are hydrocracked by (a) contacting the feed with H2 in the presence of a hydrodesulphurisation, hydrodenitrification or hydrocracking catalyst in a first reactor at 300-550 degrees C (pref. 300-470 degrees C) and 15-250) atm; (b) passing the effluent to a 1st separator at the same pressure and a temp. of 200-300 degrees C (pref. 250-290 degrees C) to obtain an NH3-redn. rich vapour fraction and a liq. effluent contg. 50 ppm NH3; (c) mixing the liq. effluent with at least part of the bottom product from a subsequent prefractionator; (d) passing the mixt. to a 2nd reactor, where it is treated at 300-550 degrees C (pref. 300-440 degrees C) and 15-250 (pref. 50-250) atm; (e) mixing the effluent from the 2nd reactor with the vapour fraction from the 1st reactor; (f) passing the mixt. to a prefractionator at the same press. as in the 2nd reactor, and stripping it with a gas (pref. H2) to obtain a vapour overhead (H2 + products) and a heavy bottom product (heavy products + unconverted feed); (g) recycling at least part of the bottoms to step (c); and (h) cooling the vapour overhead, separating an H2-rich gas, and fractionating the liq. phase to isolate the required products. Since the NH3 formed in the 1st reactor by-passes the 2nd reactor, the latter can be operated with a conventional NH3-sensitive hydrocracking catalyst. The heavy bottom product from the prefractionator is recycled at the same pressure as that in the 2nd reactor, thus reducing energy consumption.
