Abstract

Method for prepg. statistical carbon-chain copolymers (I) comprises reacting conjugated dienes (II) with vinyl aromatic monomers (III) in a hydrocarbon solvent at -30 to 150 degrees C in presence of (a) Li or R(Li)x as catalyst (R = hydrocarbyl; x = 1-4) and (b) (the new feature) as additive either the reaction prodt. (IV) of Na, K, Rb or Cs, or their hydroxides with conjugated diene homo- or co-polymers having terminal OH gps. and mol. wt. 500-5,000, or cpds. R1(M)y (V) (R = n = 1-5; m = 4-100; M = Na, K, Rb or Cs; y = 1-10) and additive is 0.005-2.5 moles per mole active Li. (I) are used to make tyres, shoe parts etc. These additives are soluble in hydrocarbons, are stable for a long time in absence of moisture and O2, and their decompsn. prodts. are non-volatile and water-insoluble so remain entirely in the polymer (where they act as plasticisers) and do not contaminate the solvent or waste water. By varying the Li:additive ratio the proportion of each monomer incorporated can be varied.
