Abstract

Rifamycin 3-hydrazones of formula (I) are new: (where R is H or 1-3 of halogens, 1-5C alkyl, methoxy, ethoxy, NO2, OH, CN or C6H5; R1 is rifamycin SV or its 16,17,18,19,28,29-hexahydro deriv., attached by the 3-C atom). (I) are antibiotics, esp. useful against Gram positive bacteria, and also active against viral tumours. Good absorption by the digestive tract is possible. (I) is prepd. by reaction of 3-formyl (hexahydro)rifamycin on the appropriate pyridyl hydrazide. In an example, 7.26 g. 3-formyl rifamycin SV in 200 ml. methanol was treated with 1.37 g. isoniazide. The mixt. was stirred for 2 hrs., gradually heating to 50 degrees C, and the solvent evaporated to give (I) is isonicotinoyl; R1 is rifamycin).
