Abstract

New derivs. are of formula (I) R1-CH=N-NH-CO-OR (where R1 is rifamycin residue or 16,17,18,19,28,29-hexahydro rifamycin residue, substd. in the 3-posn.; R is lower alkyl, opt. substd. by methoxy). (I) are esp. active against Gram positive bacteria and are also useful in the treatment of viral tumours. They are well absorbed by the digestive tract. (I) are prepd. by reaction of formyl (hexahydro) rifamycin with an alkyl carbazate. In an example, 7.26 g. 3-formyl rifamycin SV in ethanol was treated with 0.9 g. methyl carbazate to give (I; R is rifamycin; R is CH3).
