Abstract

The grafting is cleaned by a combing rake fixed at the end an arm pivoting on a horizontal axis. The comb is automatically retractable, pref. against adjustable spring-loading, if it encounters an obstruction offering resistance sufficient to threaten damage to the grating and, as the comb rises to the end of its cleaning stroke, it meets a pivoted shovel which scrapes collected waste from the comb and drumps it clear of the treatment area. The shovel is pref. fixed to arm pivoted on a horizontal axis and is lifted by the comb at the end of its cleaning stroke, the weight of the shovel holding it against the comb while continued movement of the comb ensures a relative scraping action between comb and shovel. The cleaning action is completely automatic and dependent only on the movement of the comb. The construction is simple, inexpensive and trouble free. The grating is protected against excessive cleaning force.
