Abstract

Method comprises contacting the gas or liquid with an absorbent mass contg. (a) SiO2, Al2O3, Al2O2. SiO2, a silicate; an aluminate or aluminosilicate as support, and (b) one or more metals which can alloy with mercury. The absorbent mass has a specific surface >=40 (40-250) m2/g and the metal in the mass is present as crystallites of average dia. 400 Angstrom ( 100 Angstrom). Fluids may be cleaned of mercury at high efficiency and high flow rates compared with prior art methods, without problems associated with absorption of the fluids on the absorbent.
