Abstract

Process for the prepn. of a modified phosphazene fire retardant, comprises reacting a fully hydrocarboxylated phosphazene and a partially hydrocarbyloxylated phosphazene, the phosphazene reactants being composed of a least 65% cyclics and having MN 400-10,000, (a) the fully hydrocarbyloxylated phosphazene having formula: (where n is >=3, such that Mn is as above and each R is up to 7C hydrocarbyl selected from alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkenyl, alkaryl, aralkyl and aryl),(b) the partially hydrocarboxylated phosphazene having the formula: (where T is Cl, Br or OR such that 80-95% of the T gps. are Or and remainder halogen) the process being conducted by heating the phosphazene at 90-190 degrees C, such that the modified phosphazene fire retardant is formed by splitting out RT by-product. The modified phosphazenes are incorporated into cellulose materials in an amt. of 1-30, pref. 2-20 wt. % to render the materials fire-retardant.
