Abstract

Azo esters of the general formula <IMAGE> in which R denotes hydrogen or unsubstituted or substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl; R<1> and R<2> each denotes unsubstituted or substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl; or R and R<1> together denote unsubstituted or alkyl-substituted dimethylene or trimethylene; or R<1> and R<2> together denote unsubstituted or alkyl-substituted tetramethylene or pentamethylene; and R<3> denotes unsubstituted or substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or RCOO-; are used crosslinking agents and, optionally, simultaneously as blowing agents, for crosslinking polymers (for example polyethylene, ethylene copolymers, diene rubbers or PVC) at temperatures of at least 170 DEG C, preferably from 180 to 230 DEG C, and at pressures of from 0 to 2.07 MPa (0 to 300 lbf/in<2>). These azo esters have the advantage, <inter alia>, of higher decomposition temperatures than conventional peroxide, crosslinking agents making them suitable for crosslinking polymers having a high softening temperature, and of not being toxic or causing discolouration as is the case with certain known azo crosslinking agents.
