Abstract

A missile handling mechanism for inserting the missile in a firing tube has an internal rotary drum (4) with a spiral groove (6) for a rope (7) attached to it at one end and to the device at the other. A cylindrical casing (5) covering the part of the drum carrying the coiled rope is also rotated, and means are provided for sliding the casing in relation to the drum. Drum and casing can be driven at the same speed, and the depth of the groove can be equal to the diameter of the rope. Sliding movement of the casing can be effected by an annulus (11) with which two planetary pinions (12) mesh. These pinions are fixed to screwed rods passing through plain bearings in the flange of the casing and one of the flanges of the drum and engaging in nuts fixed to the other drum flange. The nuts travel along the rods with each revolution of the drive shaft for an amount equal to the groove pitch.
